It’s been a good run, but Medium is no longer working for me

For those of you who follow me, I’m writing to say that I’m not renewing my Medium account when it expires on Sunday.

I signed up in December of 2017, paying $50 for a year. And I renewed in 2018 and 2019, enjoying the connections I was making and the fact that I was getting paid for my writing. Late last year, however, Medium changed how it calculates payments and suddenly I went from making enough money each month to fund a trip or two to the grocery store, to basically taking in nothing.

Words, Handshakes and Saying Goodbye…

I received many things over the years from my father-in-law, his kindness, sense of humor, respect, love, charm, and joy in his granddaughters among them. I saw these in his eyes and I swear the depth grew deeper as the years passed.

Something I can easily hold on to, my favorite sweater that first belonged to Dwight, my father-in-law.

Writing this, I’m finding these things are hard to represent in an article intended to honor my relationship with him and the ongoing depth of his loss in my life.

Besides, I’m pretty sure words don’t exist that would put the feelings in print.

It’s our thoughts about events that cause our reactions, not the events themselves.

I’ve been thinking lately about times when I’ve jumped to an incorrect conclusion.

Like everyone, I take information I have about an event and I respond to it. But when my responses are negative or hurtful, this can be bad. This is especially so when my reactions are based on faulty information.

So it’s helpful for me to learn to delay the time between an activating event, something that contributes to me feeling negative, and my reaction to it, thus reducing my tendency to jump to an unreasonable conclusion or act out.

That is, if I practice.
